Langtang Gosaikunda Trek – 16 Days

The 16-day Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is a perfect blend of an easier and picturesque trek in Nepal, concluding with the scenic Gosaikunda trail. The Langtang region was a favorite destination on Nepal’s trekking map until the 2015 earthquake caused significant damage. It has recently recovered, but visitor numbers are still lower than before. By trekking through this valley, you can enjoy its natural beauty while also supporting the local Tamang community economically.

This teahouse trek is a superb alternative to Annapurna and Everest, encompassing forested lowlands, alpine pastures, and yak herds in Kyanjin Gompa in Langtang Valley, along with the sacred Gosaikunda Lake and Sherpa meadows of Helambu.

The typical approach from Kathmandu is via the Trisuli River to Syabrubesi, the trek’s starting point. The route passes through dense rhododendron forests along the river before ascending into alpine regions, across glacial moraines, and reaching the rebuilt village of Langtang. Higher into the valley are the yak pasturelands and Kyanjin Gompa, a remote monastery known for yak cheese production. Optional climbs to Kyanjin Ri or Cherko Ri offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Langtang Lirung, which stands at 7234 meters.

After returning to the trailhead, the Gosaikunda route heads southeast, climbing steadily through terraced fields to highlands with stunning views of peaks like Manaslu (8163m) and the Tibetan plateau. The trail leads to Gosaikunda and its serene sacred lake, a tranquil mountain valley with magical views of the distant Himalayan peaks. In August, Hindus pilgrimage here during Janai Purnima to honor a site believed to have been Shiva’s temporary home.

The trek culminates with the climb to Laurebina La pass (4610m) and the outpost of Thadepati, offering dramatic eastern views, especially at sunrise. The final stretch leads to Chisapani and onward to Sundarijal, providing a satisfying conclusion to the journey.

Conquering Challenges of Nature: Overcoming Obstacles of the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek

The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek, located in Nepal’s mighty Himalayas, offers quite a few challenges that need to be met with preparation and endurance. The elevation gain of the trial runs through various landscapes from lush forests to rocky alpine terrain, finally reaching the heights with a maximum altitude reached at Gosaikunda Pass of 4,610 meters. Altitude sickness remains a real threat; therefore proper acclimatization should be done. The weather can also be inclement, and it might suddenly turn very cold with snow or rain. Constant steep ascents and descents on rocky and sometimes icy paths are the next challenges, calling for good physical fitness and proper gear. These are challenges that offer incredible rewards if one is prepared to meet them.

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Accommodation

The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek offers a variety of tea houses along its less-traveled route, eliminating the need for tents. Similar to the Annapurna Circuit Trek and the Everest Base Camp Trek, this trek relies on tea house accommodations. The tea houses in Langtang Gosaikunda are typically cozier and more integrated with local families and their culture. Room quality varies by location and price. As you travel deeper into the mountains and higher in elevation, accommodations become more basic. Expect simple rooms, often with shared bathrooms and squat toilets, without heating. We provide you with a clean -20°C sleeping bag. At more established tea houses, you may purchase a hot shower for less than a dollar (paid in local currency), when available.
